Musically, the world of Phillip Charles
has been a perennial bright spot for us at Hallucination.
In an industry where words like "artistry",
"jazz" and "musician" (or even "music"
for that matter) are thrown around with such reckless
abandon....Phillip is the real deal. A member of Philly's
Tigerhook
Corporation, Phillip has engineered, produced,
played with and remixed the likes of King Britt,
Ursurla Rucker, and Miles Davis respectively.

One night in Philadelphia,
Three - already seeking music for our new label - was
invited by Phillip for a listening session. The "Electric
Dreamers" single from Phillip's forthcoming
album on Shaboom Recordings and "Holy
Sound" on Ovum had previously sparked
Three's curiosity, but over the course of several hours
his ears were treated to such a diverse range of music
that his interest had been peaked. Mixes like the vocal
deep house bliss of "Delilah - Delilah (Be Strong
4 Me)"
(Yoshitoshi), his unreleased phuture garage
mix of "Victor Duplaix - Manhood" and
the funky techno remix of "Sean Q6 - Of Course"
(Bedrock) moved Three to return home with a CDR
of Phil's orignals. A CDR that wouldn't leave the player
for the next week, and would then go on to launch Hallucination
Limited.
Delivered here is Phillip
Charles' "Controlled Input"
EP. A collection of Phillip's music that is as orignal
as it is danceable. While the tracks contain unifying
characteristics they each stand very clearly apart on
their own.
A - "Seminal
Vessel"- A pure, 21st century house music instrumental.
Like Francois Kevorkian dubbing out Vangelis, but with
Miles Davis mixing the drinks. Jazzed --- not jazz.
AA 1 - "2600 AD" - Most likely
candidate for the big rooms. Watch them dance
inwards.
AA 2 - "Controlled Input" -
We have no idea. Perhaps William Orbit and Richie Hawtin
laughing at us rather than with us.
Does it all sound too good to be true? You decide. We
felt this music just had to be heard.
